Venue change of Farmers’ market in St. Andrew and St. Catherine to be held this Friday and on April 1

KINGSTON; Jamaica: The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries wishes to advise the public that it will be staging two more farmers’ markets to be held March 18 and on April 1. This as it continues to mop up excess supply of several crops and following the public’s show of support and success of the most recent markets held across the country. More than 24M dollars has been earned by farmers from the last two markets (February 11 and March 4) as the Ministry continues to find creative means to support our farmers. There have also been two venue changes as we seek to provide a comfortable environment for the nearly 20-thousand patrons who support the initiative.

The venue changes at this Friday’s Farmers’ market (March 18, 2011) will be in St. Andrew and in St. Catherine. The other venues remain the same. 

1.      St. Andrew - Liguanea Plaza Rear car park, entrance on Munroe Road

2.      St. Catherine – Praise Plaza, Port Henderson Road, between Rapid Sheffield and Petcom service

3.       Portland - Folly Ground, Port Antonio

4.       St. Mary – All Island Banana Growers Association Boxing Plant

5.      Manchester - RADA Parish office compound, Mandeville

6.      5. St. James - RADA parish compound, Catherine Hall

More than 150 farmers will be participating in the markets, providing not only glut items (tomato, lettuce, cabbage, pak-choi etc) but also non-glut items and packaged foods.

Following the April 1 farmers’ market, the Ministry will review the situation to determine whether there is a need to have future markets or to suspend the practice.
